4.5m–4.8m SUV Sales in India Grow Strongly in January 2026

The Indian SUV market continues to grow rapidly, especially in the mid-size SUV category between 4.5m and 4.8m. According to recent sales data, this segment recorded 39,030 units sold in January 2026, reflecting strong consumer demand for larger SUVs with premium features and road presence.

This segment includes some of the most popular vehicles in India such as the Mahindra Scorpio, XUV7XO, Tata Harrier, Tata Safari, and Toyota Fortuner.

Compared with January 2025 sales of 33,409 units, the segment registered a 16.82 percent year-on-year growth. On a month-on-month basis, sales increased sharply by 34.35 percent, compared with 29,052 units sold in December 2025.

Let’s take a closer look at how each SUV performed in this growing category.

Mahindra Scorpio Continues to Lead the Segment

Mahindra’s Scorpio lineup maintained its leadership position in the segment.

The Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio N recorded 15,542 units in January 2026, making it the best-selling SUV in this category.

While year-on-year growth remained stable with a 0.65 percent increase compared with 15,442 units sold last year, month-on-month sales saw a small decline of 2.16 percent from 15,885 units in December 2025.

Despite the slight monthly dip, the Scorpio continues to dominate due to its strong reputation for durability, off-road capability, and commanding road presence.

Mahindra XUV7XO Records Strong Growth

The Mahindra XUV7XO secured the second position in the segment.

In January 2026, the SUV recorded 10,133 units sold, reflecting a 20.65 percent year-on-year increase compared with 8,399 units in January 2025.

The model also experienced an impressive month-on-month growth of over 611 percent, rising from 1,424 units in December 2025.

Mahindra’s expanding lineup and continuous updates have helped the brand maintain a strong presence in the mid-size SUV segment.

Mahindra Electric SUVs Gain Momentum

Mahindra’s electric SUVs are also gaining popularity among buyers.

The Mahindra XEV 9e recorded 1,945 units sold in January 2026, showing a 71.06 percent year-on-year growth.

Another electric model, the XEV 9S, contributed 612 units during the month.

With rising interest in electric mobility, Mahindra’s EV lineup is gradually becoming an important part of the brand’s SUV strategy.

Tata Harrier and Safari Show Massive Growth

Tata Motors delivered one of the strongest performances in this SUV segment.

The Tata Harrier and Harrier EV recorded 3,711 units sold in January 2026, marking a 149.40 percent year-on-year growth compared with 1,488 units sold in January 2025.

Month-on-month sales also improved significantly with a 56.06 percent increase.

Similarly, the Tata Safari recorded 2,375 units, reflecting a 53.42 percent year-on-year growth and a 64.25 percent increase month-on-month.

These numbers highlight the growing popularity of Tata’s larger SUVs, particularly with recent design updates and improved feature packages.

Toyota Fortuner Maintains Steady Demand

The Toyota Fortuner, one of India’s most recognised premium SUVs, recorded 3,046 units sold in January 2026.

This represents a slight 3.27 percent decline compared with 3,149 units sold in January 2025.

However, month-on-month sales improved by 2.87 percent, showing that the Fortuner continues to remain a strong choice among buyers seeking reliability and performance in a large SUV.

Hyundai Alcazar and Other SUVs in the Segment

The Hyundai Alcazar recorded 962 units sold in January 2026, reflecting a 26.56 percent year-on-year decline. Despite the yearly drop, month-on-month sales increased significantly by 66.15 percent.

Other SUVs in this segment also contributed to the overall numbers:

  • MG Hector and Hector Plus recorded 334 units, showing a decline in both yearly and monthly sales.

  • Skoda Kodiaq sold 139 units, but achieved an impressive 1,290 percent year-on-year growth compared with just 10 units last year.

  • Jeep Compass and Jeep Meridian recorded declines in sales.

  • Volkswagen Tiguan sold 34 units, while the newly introduced Volkswagen Tayron added 5 units in January 2026.

Meanwhile, the Hyundai Tucson and MG Gloster recorded zero sales during the month.

Why the Mid-Size SUV Segment Is Growing

The strong growth in this segment reflects several trends in the Indian car market.

Many buyers now prefer SUVs because they offer:

  • Higher ground clearance

  • Spacious interiors

  • Advanced safety features

  • Premium design and road presence

Manufacturers are also introducing updated models and electric variants, which further boost buyer interest.

With 39,030 units sold in January 2026, the 4.5m–4.8m SUV category continues to play a major role in India’s overall automotive sales.

Protecting the Smart Keys of Modern SUVs

Modern SUVs like the Scorpio, Fortuner, Harrier, and XUV series come with advanced smart key systems that control locking, unlocking, and remote functions.

Since these keys are used daily, they are exposed to scratches, accidental drops, and general wear.

Using a premium car key cover helps protect the smart key while also enhancing its appearance.

At Style N Flaunt, luxury car key covers are designed to offer both protection and style. Made with materials such as metal, carbon fibre, and premium silicone, these covers ensure that your car key remains safe while adding a refined touch to your car accessories.

Final Thoughts

The 4.5m to 4.8m SUV segment in India continues to grow rapidly, driven by popular models like the Mahindra Scorpio, Tata Harrier, and Toyota Fortuner. With strong sales momentum and increasing demand for feature-rich SUVs, this segment is expected to remain competitive in the coming years.

As modern vehicles become more technologically advanced, protecting everyday accessories such as smart car keys also becomes important. Investing in a premium car key cover is a simple way to protect your key while adding style to your driving experience.
